What should I know before claiming HVUT credits?

Form 2290 refund claims are processed using Form 8849 Schedule 6.

You can claim a refund credit if:
  • Your vehicle that was sold/stolen/destroyed
  • Your vehicle did not exceed the 5,000 (7,500 for agriculture) miles on public highways during the tax period.
  • You overpaid on your 2290 tax

Sold, Destroyed, and Stolen Vehicles

If you paid the Form 2290 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax on a vehicle and it was later sold/stolen/destroyed during the same tax year, you can file a Form 2290 refund claim online using Form 8849 Schedule 6. To file you will need the vehicle's VIN and the date the event occurred.

Low Mileage Limits

If your vehicle usage is 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles) during the tax period, you can claim HVUT credits using Form 8849 Schedule 6.

Overpaid 2290 tax

If you overpaid your 2290 tax last year, you can claim a 2290 refund online. You need to file Form 8849 Schedule 6 and provide details on when you paid the excess tax amount, VIN, and overpaid amount.

How Will I Get My Refund?

The IRS will mail you a check for your total tax refund within 4 to 6 weeks.
